How to Save Audio Messages on iPhone (So They Never Expire)

· 4 min read

In short

To save audio messages on iPhone, tap Keep under the audio message in Messages before it expires. To keep every one automatically, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Expire (under Audio Messages) and choose Never. For a real file, touch and hold the message and tap Save to Voice Memos.

Here's how to save audio messages on iPhone: tap Keep under the audio message in the Messages app. That's it for one voice message. To stop them from disappearing ever again, open Settings > Apps > Messages, tap Expire under Audio Messages and pick Never. And if you want an actual audio file you can back up, touch and hold the message and tap Save to Voice Memos.

Below is every method, what each one actually protects you from, and what to do if a message already vanished.

Why do voice messages disappear on iPhone?

By default, iPhone deletes audio messages 2 minutes after you listen to them (or after you send one). According to Apple's iPhone User Guide, the recording is removed from the conversation on your iPhone only, unless you tap Keep.

Apple does this to save storage. It makes sense for "omw, grabbing coffee." It makes a lot less sense for your grandma singing happy birthday.

How do I save an audio message on iPhone?

Tap Keep right under the audio message. It appears after you finish listening, and you have 2 minutes to tap it.

  1. Open the Messages app and go to the conversation.
  2. Play the audio message.
  3. Tap Keep under the message bubble.

Once kept, the message stays in that conversation like any photo or text. You'll also find it in the conversation's details under attachments.

How do I save all audio messages on iPhone automatically?

Change one setting and every audio message you send or receive stays put.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps, then Messages. (On iOS 17 and earlier, Messages is listed directly in Settings.)
  3. Scroll to Audio Messages and tap Expire.
  4. Choose Never.

This is the single best thing you can do if voice notes matter to you. Do it now, before the next one comes in. Note that it only affects messages going forward. Anything that already expired won't come back.

How do I save an iPhone voice message as a file?

Touch and hold the audio message, then tap Save to Voice Memos. Apple documents this option for iOS 18 and later. The message becomes a recording in the Voice Memos app, separate from the chat.

Why bother if you already tapped Keep? Because a kept message still lives inside one conversation. If someone deletes the thread, switches phones without a full backup, or turns on "Keep Messages: 30 days" in settings, it can go. A file in Voice Memos is something you control.

From Voice Memos you can go one step further:

  1. Open Voice Memos and tap the recording.
  2. Tap the More button (three dots).
  3. Tap Save to Files and pick iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.

You can also tap Share and email it to yourself, AirDrop it to a Mac, or drop it in Google Drive. The goal is to have the recording in at least two places.

Is "Keep Messages" the same as audio message expiry?

No, and this trips people up. There are two separate settings in Settings > Apps > Messages:

SettingWhat it controlsSafe choice
Audio Messages > ExpireWhether audio messages delete 2 minutes after listeningNever
Message History > Keep MessagesWhether whole conversations auto-delete after 30 days or 1 yearForever

If Keep Messages is set to 30 days, even a "kept" audio message will be deleted with the rest of the old messages. Check both.

Can I recover an expired voice message on iPhone?

Usually not. Once an audio message expires, it's removed from your iPhone, and there's no button in Messages to bring it back. Two things are worth trying:

  • Ask the sender. Expiry only deletes it on your phone. The recipient (or sender) may still have their copy. Ask them to resend it, then tap Keep.
  • Check an older backup. If you backed up your iPhone to a computer or iCloud before the message expired, restoring that backup could bring it back. Restoring replaces what's on your phone now, so only consider it for something truly irreplaceable, and back up your current phone first.

Be skeptical of apps that promise to "recover expired iMessage audio." Most just read existing backups, and many want full access to your personal data.

What about voicemails and WhatsApp voice notes?

Those are different apps with different rules:

How do I keep the voice messages that matter most organized?

Saving is step one. Finding them again in two years is step two. A few habits help:

  • Rename recordings in Voice Memos with who and what: "Mom, birthday song 2026."
  • Make a folder in Voice Memos or Files for each person you care about.
  • Back up regularly. Our guide to backing up voice memos covers iCloud and computer backups.

This is exactly the problem we're building Tucket for. When Tucket launches, you'll be able to save a voice note someone sent you into a "pocket" for that person, next to their photo, so their laugh and their "goodnight" are one tap away instead of buried in a chat. It's private: only the people you share a pocket with can hear it. You can read more on our guide to saving voice messages.
