How to Back Up Voice Memos on iPhone and Android
· 4 min read
In short
To back up voice memos on iPhone, turn on Voice Memos in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All, and export important recordings with Share > Save to Files. On Android, turn on Back up & sync in Google Recorder, or Samsung Cloud for Voice Recorder. Keep a second copy on a computer.
The simplest way to back up voice memos on iPhone is to turn on Voice Memos in iCloud: Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All > Voice Memos. On Android, use your recorder app's built-in backup (Back up & sync in Google Recorder on Pixel, or Samsung Cloud for Samsung's Voice Recorder). Then, for the recordings you'd be heartbroken to lose, export a second copy to a computer or cloud drive.
That second copy matters more than people think. Sync isn't the same as a backup: if you delete a recording on one device, sync deletes it everywhere.
How do I back up voice memos to iCloud?
Turn on Voice Memos in your iCloud settings. Apple's Voice Memos guide explains that recordings then stay up to date on every iPhone, iPad and Mac signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud, then See All under the apps using iCloud.
- Scroll down and turn on Voice Memos.
- Stay on Wi-Fi so your existing recordings can upload.
Synced recordings count against your iCloud storage, so if you have years of memos, check you have room in Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
Does iCloud Backup include voice memos?
Only if Voice Memos sync is off. Apple's iCloud Backup overview says the backup covers data that isn't already synced to iCloud. So either way your recordings end up in iCloud: through Voice Memos sync, or inside your device backup. Sync is the better option because you can play the recordings on your other devices without restoring a whole phone.
Is iCloud sync enough to back up voice memos?
Not quite. Sync mirrors your recordings across devices, which also means a deletion mirrors everywhere. If you accidentally delete something, check Recently Deleted in the Voice Memos app quickly, because items there are removed after a while based on your settings.
For a true backup, keep at least one extra copy that sync can't touch. The Library of Congress's personal archiving guide for audio recommends at least two copies on separate storage, kept in different places.
How do I export voice memos from iPhone to Files?
Use Save to Files. Per Apple's export guide:
- Open Voice Memos and tap the recording.
- Tap the More button (three dots), then Share.
- Scroll down and tap Save to Files.
- Choose a folder and tap Save.
Recordings export as .m4a files. Saving to an iCloud Drive folder gives you a copy that lives outside the Voice Memos app. Saving to a Google Drive or Dropbox folder (if you have those apps installed) puts a copy with a different company entirely, which is even safer.
How do I back up voice memos to a computer?
On a Mac, the easiest way is through the Voice Memos app:
- Turn on Voice Memos in iCloud on your Mac (System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All) so your iPhone recordings show up.
- Open the Voice Memos app on the Mac.
- Select recordings (Command-A selects all) and drag them into a Finder folder.
That leaves you with plain .m4a files you can copy to an external drive. Apple's Voice Memos for Mac guide covers sharing and exporting.
On Windows, save the recordings to iCloud Drive or another cloud folder from your iPhone, then download them on the PC. A full iPhone backup made in the Apple Devices app or iTunes also includes voice memos when iCloud sync is off, but you can't easily pull single recordings out of it.
How do I back up voice recordings on Android?
It depends on your phone's recorder app.
Google Recorder (Pixel): According to Google's Recorder help:
- Open Recorder and tap your profile icon.
- Choose the Google Account to back up to.
- Tap Recorder settings, then Back up & sync, and turn it on.
Your recordings then show up at recorder.google.com and count toward your Google storage.
Samsung Voice Recorder: Go to Settings, tap your Samsung account at the top, then Samsung Cloud, and look for Back up data, where you can include voice recordings. Menu names vary by One UI version, so search Settings for "backup" if you don't see it.
Any Android phone: Recordings are regular audio files, so you can find them in your Files app (often in a "Recordings" folder), then copy them to Google Drive or plug into a computer and drag them over.
What's the best way to organize backed-up voice memos?
Rename the ones that matter. Voice Memos names recordings by location or "New Recording 12," which means nothing in five years. Try something like dad-singing-birthday-2026.m4a or bestie-voice-note-graduation.m4a. Group them in folders by person.
Our guide on how to preserve a loved one's voice has more on organizing recordings that carry real weight.
How often should I back up voice memos?
If sync is on, new recordings back up automatically. For your extra offline copy, every few months is a solid rhythm, plus right before you switch phones. If you're about to upgrade, see how to transfer voice memos to a new iPhone.
What about voice messages from other apps?
Voice notes inside WhatsApp, iMessage or Instagram aren't voice memos, and they don't back up the same way. Our guide to saving voice messages covers how to get them out of each app.
And if most of the recordings you care about are short clips of specific people, like your partner, your mom or your best friend, that's what we're building Tucket for. When it launches on iPhone and Android, each person gets their own pocket with their sounds and photo, so you're not scrolling through 400 memos to find one laugh. Keep your backups going either way.
Questions people ask
- Are voice memos backed up automatically on iPhone?
- Yes, if Voice Memos is turned on in iCloud settings, or if iCloud Backup is on. To be safe, also export important recordings to Files or a computer.
- Where are voice memos stored on iPhone?
- Inside the Voice Memos app, and in iCloud if sync is on. They aren't visible as separate files in the Files app unless you export them with Save to Files.
- Can I back up voice memos to Google Drive?
- Yes. Export a recording with Share, choose Save to Files, and pick your Google Drive folder, or upload the files from the Google Drive app.
- How do I recover deleted voice memos?
- Open the Voice Memos app and check Recently Deleted. If it's gone from there, you may be able to restore it from an older iCloud or computer backup, which replaces the data on your phone.
- Do voice memos take up iCloud storage?
- Yes. Synced recordings count against your iCloud storage, and Lossless recordings take up much more space than Compressed ones.
