How to Save Voice Messages in WhatsApp (iPhone, Android, PC)
· 4 min read
In short
To save a voice message in WhatsApp on iPhone, touch and hold the voice note, tap Forward, then the Share icon, and choose Save to Files. On Android, touch and hold it, tap Share and pick Google Drive or Files, or find it in the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder. On WhatsApp Web or desktop, click Download in the message menu.
To save a voice message in WhatsApp on iPhone, touch and hold the voice note, tap Forward, tap the Share icon in the bottom corner, then choose Save to Files. On Android, touch and hold it and tap Share to send it to Google Drive or your Files app, or grab it straight from the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder. On a computer, WhatsApp Web and the desktop app have a Download option for each voice note.
WhatsApp menus shift a little between versions, so if a button is in a slightly different place on your phone, look for the same words.
Do WhatsApp voice notes get deleted?
Not on their own. Regular WhatsApp voice notes stay in the chat until someone deletes them. But they're easier to lose than you'd think:
- Disappearing messages. If the chat has disappearing messages turned on, voice notes vanish with everything else after the timer.
- View once voice messages. These play once and can't be saved, forwarded or starred. That's the whole point of them, so there's no legit way around it.
- Switching phones without a backup, deleting the chat, or clearing storage.
- The sender deleting it for everyone.
Saving the ones you love as a separate file protects them from all of this.
How do I save a voice message in WhatsApp on iPhone?
Forward it to the Share sheet, then save it to Files.
- Open the chat in WhatsApp.
- Touch and hold the voice note.
- Tap Forward.
- Tap the Share icon (square with an arrow) in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Save to Files.
- Choose iCloud Drive or On My iPhone, rename it if you want, and tap Save.
From the same Share sheet you can also email it to yourself or save it to Google Drive. Do one voice note at a time; iPhone doesn't have a bulk folder like Android does.
How do I save a voice message in WhatsApp on Android?
You have two options: share a single voice note, or copy the files directly.
Share one voice note:
- Open the chat in WhatsApp.
- Touch and hold the voice note so it's selected.
- Tap the Share icon at the top (on some versions it's under the three-dot menu).
- Choose Drive, Files, Gmail, or another app to save it.
Find the files on your phone: WhatsApp already stores voice notes on Android as files. Open your Files app (or My Files on Samsung) and search for WhatsApp Voice Notes. On recent Android versions the path is usually:
Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes
Inside are folders by week, full of .opus files. Copy the ones you want to Google Drive, a computer or an SD card. Filenames don't say who sent them, so match them up by date, or use the share method above for the important ones. For more Android tips, see how to save voice messages on Android.
How do I download WhatsApp voice notes on a computer?
WhatsApp Web and the desktop app let you download any voice note.
- Open web.whatsapp.com or the WhatsApp desktop app and link your phone.
- Open the chat and hover over the voice note.
- Click the small down arrow that appears.
- Click Download and choose where to save it.
This is the easiest way to save several voice notes at once onto a computer, where they're simple to back up.
What format are WhatsApp voice notes, and can I play them?
WhatsApp voice notes are usually Opus audio, saved as .opus or .ogg files. Phones, Chrome and VLC play them fine, but some older players and car stereos don't. If you need an MP3, our guide on how to convert Opus to MP3 shows free methods that don't upload your private recordings anywhere.
Can I export a whole WhatsApp chat with voice notes?
Yes, with Export chat, but treat it as a snapshot, not a perfect archive.
- iPhone: open the chat, tap the contact or group name at the top, scroll down and tap Export Chat, then choose Attach Media.
- Android: open the chat, tap the three-dot menu, then More > Export chat, and choose Include media.
You get a text file of the conversation plus media attachments. WhatsApp's help center notes that choosing to include media adds the most recent media, so in a long chat, older voice notes may be left out. If specific voice notes matter, save those individually too.
Does WhatsApp backup save voice notes?
Yes, WhatsApp's chat backup (iCloud on iPhone, Google Drive on Android) includes voice messages. Find it in Settings > Chats > Chat backup. The catch: a backup is only for restoring WhatsApp. You can't open it and play a voice note, and the next backup overwrites the last one. It's a safety net, not a keepsake folder.
How do I keep my favorite voice notes from getting lost?
Treat the voice notes you love like photos: save them out of the chat, name them, and keep two copies.
- Rename the file with who and what: "Dad, proud of you, graduation."
- Make one folder per person in Files, Google Drive or iCloud Drive.
- Keep a second copy somewhere else, like a computer or another cloud. See how to back up voice memos.
That folder-per-person idea is where Tucket comes from. When Tucket launches, you'll be able to save a voice note someone sent you into a pocket just for them, with their photo on every sound, so your best friend's "ok but listen" rant and your mom's goodnight are easy to find and replay. It's private, with no feed and no strangers. More in our guide to saving voice messages.
Questions people ask
- How do I save a voice message in WhatsApp without forwarding it?
- On Android, copy it from the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder in your Files app. On a computer, use Download in WhatsApp Web or desktop. On iPhone, the Forward screen is just the route to the Share sheet; you save to Files without sending it to anyone.
- Can I save a WhatsApp view once voice message?
- No. View once voice messages can't be saved, forwarded or starred, and they disappear after you play them. If it matters, ask the sender to send it again as a regular voice note.
- Where are WhatsApp voice notes stored on Android?
- Usually in Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes, sorted into weekly folders. Search "WhatsApp Voice Notes" in your Files app if the path looks different.
- Where are WhatsApp voice notes stored on iPhone?
- Inside the WhatsApp app, where the Files app can't see them. Use Forward, then Share, then Save to Files to get a copy you can access.
- Does the sender know if I save their WhatsApp voice note?
- WhatsApp doesn't send a notification when you save or share a regular voice note. Forwarding it to a chat shows a "Forwarded" label to whoever receives it there.
- Can I save WhatsApp voice notes as MP3?
- WhatsApp saves them as Opus audio, not MP3. Convert them with a free desktop tool like VLC or FFmpeg if you need MP3.
