How to Voice Record on iPhone: Voice Memos Guide

· 8 min read

In short

To voice record on iPhone, open the Voice Memos app (in the Utilities folder), tap the red Record button, and tap Stop when you're done. Your recording saves automatically as New Recording or your location's name. From there you can rename it, trim it, turn on Enhance Recording, share it as an .m4a file, or sync it with iCloud.

To voice record on iPhone, open Voice Memos (it lives in the Utilities folder), tap the red Record button, and tap Stop when you're finished. That's it. The recording saves on its own, named "New Recording" or after your location if Location Services is on.

Voice Memos does a lot more than that one button, though. Below is the full guide to Voice Memos on iPhone: pausing and resuming, renaming, trimming, cleaning up background noise, sharing the file, syncing it across devices, choosing quality settings, and recording a phone call. Steps follow Apple's iPhone User Guide; menus can look slightly different depending on your iOS version and iPhone model.

How do I record a voice memo on my iPhone?

Open Voice Memos, tap Record, talk, tap Stop. Here are the steps in order:

  1. Open the Voice Memos app. It's in the Utilities folder, or swipe down on the Home Screen and search "Voice Memos."
  2. Tap the red Record button.
  3. Hold the phone 6 to 8 inches from whoever is speaking, with the bottom microphone uncovered.
  4. Tap Stop when you're done.

Your recording appears at the top of the list. An orange dot shows in the corner of the screen while the mic is on, which is Apple's privacy indicator, not an error.

Tip: if you use it a lot, drag Voice Memos out of the Utilities folder onto your Home Screen. On iPhones with an Action button, you can also set that button to start a voice memo in Settings > Action Button.

How do I pause and resume a recording?

Tap the Pause button while recording, then tap Resume to keep going in the same file. Apple calls this the advanced recording view:

  1. Start a recording.
  2. Swipe up from the top of the waveform to open the full recording view.
  3. Tap Pause to stop for a moment, then tap Resume to continue.
  4. To listen back before saving, tap Play. You can drag the waveform to start playback from a different spot.
  5. Tap Done to save.

This is handy for interviews or bedtime stories where you need a break without ending up with five separate files.

Can I use other apps while recording?

Yes. You can go to the Home Screen and open another app, and Voice Memos keeps recording, as long as that app doesn't play audio. If the other app starts playing sound, the recording stops. On iPhones with the Dynamic Island, you'll see the recording running at the top of the screen; tap it to jump back.

Want silence instead of the start and stop chimes? Turn on Silent mode before you record.

How do I rename a voice memo?

Tap the recording in your list, tap its name, and type a new one. That's the whole process. Good names save you later: "Mom, lasagna recipe, Thanksgiving 2026" is a lot easier to find than "New Recording 47."

To find an old recording, swipe down on the list to reveal the search field. Search also looks inside transcripts on iPhones that support Voice Memos transcription.

How do I trim or edit a voice memo on iPhone?

Open the recording, tap the More button (three dots), tap Edit Recording, then tap the Trim button and drag the yellow handles. Full steps:

  1. Tap the recording, then tap More, then Edit Recording.
  2. Tap the Trim button.
  3. Drag the yellow handles around the part you want. Pinch open on the waveform to zoom in for precise cuts.
  4. Tap Trim to keep only the selected part, or Delete to remove the selected part.
  5. Tap Apply, then Done.
  6. Choose Save Recording to overwrite the original, or Save as New Recording to keep the original untouched.

If the recording matters (a grandparent, a voice you can't re-record), always pick Save as New Recording. You can't un-trim an overwritten file.

To redo a section instead of cutting it, use Replace: in Edit Recording, drag the playhead to where you want to start, tap Replace, and record over that part.

How do I make a voice memo sound better?

Use Enhance Recording to reduce background noise and echo on Mono and Stereo recordings:

  1. Tap the recording, then tap More.
  2. Tap Options and turn on Enhance Recording.

The same Options menu has Skip Silence (jumps over gaps during playback) and a playback speed slider. On newer iOS versions, Spatial Audio recordings get Studio Sound instead, which turns down background sound and reverb so a voice sounds closer to studio quality. Apple notes that these playback options don't change the recording itself; they apply each time you play that file.

You can also choose how background sound is captured before you record. With Voice Memos open, open Control Center, tap Voice Memos at the top, then pick Voice Isolation (filters out background noise) or Wide Spectrum (keeps the room sound, not available on every model).

The biggest quality upgrade is free, though: get closer. A quiet room, a soft surface under the phone, and 6 to 8 inches of distance beat any filter. More tips in our guide to recording someone's voice in good quality.

What are the best Voice Memos quality settings?

For voices you want to keep, choose Lossless audio quality. Go to Settings > Apps > Voice Memos (on older iOS versions, Settings > Voice Memos) and look for these:

SettingOptionsWhat to pick
Audio QualityCompressed or LosslessLossless for keepsakes and music, Compressed to save space
Recording ModeMono, Stereo, Spatial AudioStereo or Spatial Audio for room sound, Mono for simple voice notes
Clear DeletedNever, Immediately, After 1 day, After 7 days, After 30 days30 days or Never, so accidents are recoverable
Location-based NamingOn or OffOn if you like auto names like "Home"

Compressed files are much smaller, Lossless files sound better and take more storage. Spatial Audio and some options depend on your iPhone model. Apple's recording guide explains the modes.

How do I share or export a voice memo?

Tap the recording, tap More, then tap Share and choose AirDrop, Messages, Mail, or another app. Before sending, Apple's sharing steps let you tap Options and choose:

  • Rendered: one .m4a file with all effects and layers mixed in. Pick this almost always; it plays anywhere.
  • Editable: a file that keeps effects and layers adjustable, for someone with a compatible device.

To save a copy as a file you control, tap More, tap Share, scroll down and tap Save to Files, then choose a folder (On My iPhone, iCloud Drive, or a connected service). To share several at once, tap Select above the list, pick the recordings, and tap Share.

Where are voice memos stored on iPhone?

Voice memos live inside the Voice Memos app, not as loose files you can browse in the Files app. If Voice Memos is turned on in iCloud, they're also stored in iCloud and show up on your iPad and Mac signed in to the same Apple Account.

To turn on syncing, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All, then turn on Voice Memos (Apple's steps). Keep in mind sync isn't a true backup: delete a memo on one device and it disappears everywhere after the Recently Deleted window. For recordings you never want to lose, export copies too. Our guide to backing up voice memos covers the safest setups, and this one covers moving them to a new phone.

How do I recover a deleted voice memo?

Open the Recently Deleted folder in Voice Memos, tap the recording, and tap Recover. Deleted memos stay there for 30 days by default, or whatever you've set under Settings > Apps > Voice Memos > Clear Deleted. After that, they're gone unless you have a backup.

Is there a time limit on iPhone voice recordings?

Apple doesn't list a maximum length for a single voice memo; the practical limit is your free storage. Lossless files fill space much faster than Compressed, so check Settings > General > iPhone Storage before recording something long like a full family dinner.

Can I record a phone call on iPhone?

Yes, on iOS 18.1 or later in supported countries. During a call, tap the More button, then tap Call Recording. Per Apple's call recording guide:

  1. Make or answer a call in the Phone app.
  2. Tap More, then Call Recording. Both people hear an audio notice that the call is being recorded.
  3. To stop, tap Stop or just hang up.
  4. The recording saves to a Call Recordings folder in the Notes app. Tap View Saved Call to open it.

In select regions and languages, Notes also shows a transcript, and iPhones with Apple Intelligence can show a summary. To save the audio itself, open the note, tap the recording, tap More, and choose Save Audio Files or Share Audio. You can turn the feature off in Settings > Apps > Phone > Audio Call Recording.

Apple lists places where call recording isn't available, including the European Union, so check the iOS Feature Availability page if you don't see the option.

Do I need permission to record someone?

Ask first, every time. Apple's own guide says to make sure the other person is willing to be recorded, and the iPhone's spoken notice on calls helps, but laws about recording conversations vary by state and country, and some places require everyone's consent. Beyond the law, people relax and sound like themselves when they know and agree. "Can I record this? I want to keep your voice" works on almost anyone.

What to do with the voices you record

Voice Memos is great at capturing. It's less great at keeping the people in it close: everything lands in one long list of "New Recording" files. That's the idea behind Tucket, an app we're building that gives each person in your life their own pocket of sounds, each with a photo of them, so a clip of your partner laughing or your grandpa's "drive safe" plays in a tap. It isn't out yet; when Tucket launches, your recordings will have a home that feels like them.

Questions people ask
